Trump Pushes Supreme Court to Revoke Legal Status of 530,000 Immigrants

The Trump administration has made a forceful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to revoke temporary legal status granted to 530,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. The move is framed as an effort to address the immigration surge triggered by the Biden administration’s use of “humanitarian parole.”

In a filing submitted Thursday, the Department of Justice argued that Biden’s 2022 initiative—expanded in 2023—violates federal law. The program allowed migrants to enter the country by plane if they had U.S.-based sponsors. According to Trump, this was a deliberate attempt by progressives to sidestep legal immigration procedures and flood the nation with unchecked entrants.

A ruling in April by Judge Indira Talwani, appointed by President Obama, blocked the effort to rescind the migrants’ status, mandating individual case reviews. Conservatives see the decision as politically motivated, accusing Democrats of prioritizing votes over national security. In places like Texas, local communities reportedly face overcrowded schools and strained public resources.

The Department of Homeland Security, led by Kristi Noem, had previously ordered the affected individuals to depart by April 24 or face removal. Judge Talwani’s injunction left thousands in limbo, fueling criticism from the right that the left is weaponizing compassion and painting Trump as the antagonist.

The Supreme Court filing not only challenges the parole policy but also seeks to reassert presidential authority over immigration without what Republicans describe as interference from activist judges. Conservatives argue that the Biden-era policies have escalated public spending, citing a 2024 estimate from the Center for Immigration Studies that puts migrant-related costs at over $150 billion.

Biden’s parole program, initially limited to Venezuelans, was later broadened in response to growing pressure at the southern border. Critics claim it only encouraged more arrivals, many lacking legitimate claims. While progressives decry Trump’s stance as “heartless,” conservatives argue it’s a necessary step to restore order.

Pro-immigration groups have pushed back, emphasizing migrant rights. But Republican leaders maintain that the real damage comes from a system that strains public services and undermines lawful processes.

The Supreme Court’s decision will be a pivotal moment. A ruling in Trump’s favor could set a legal precedent emphasizing enforcement and order. A loss, however, may prolong what critics call a state of managed chaos.

Communities like El Paso, grappling with overwhelmed shelters and rising local costs, reflect growing public frustration. Trump’s approach resonates with voters who demand structure and sovereignty over what they view as progressive overreach.

This isn’t, according to Trump’s supporters, an attack on migrants—it’s a defense of the rule of law, national identity, and economic stability. As border policies hang in the balance, the call from the right is clear: “law, order, and national pride.”
