Former South Carolina governor and Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is reportedly in talks with former President Donald Trump’s campaign about appearing with him at an upcoming event, according to a report from The Bulwark.
Trump and Haley have had a rocky relationship, initially smooth after Trump appointed Haley as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 2016. However, tensions flared this year during the presidential primary season, with Trump calling Haley “bird brain” as both pursued the Republican nomination. Despite the friction, the two reconciled, with Haley ending her campaign in March and endorsing Trump at the Republican National Convention in July.
Sources familiar with the discussions say the details are still being finalized, but a town hall event is being planned for late October. This would mark the first time Trump and Haley have appeared together since July. Polls show Trump struggling with suburban women, and Haley’s presence could help sway female voters.
“We’re seeing Republican candidates struggle with women, and that includes Donald Trump,” a Republican operative close to the campaign told CNN. “Haley helps with that.”
Although Haley acknowledged she’s still hurt by some of Trump’s remarks, she emphasized the greater importance of the nation’s future. On her SiriusXM radio show in September, she said, “I have not forgotten what he said about me. I’ve not forgotten what he said about my husband or his… military service. I haven’t forgotten… [being called] ‘bird brain,’ but I’m still for Trump because I think he will make the country better.”
