In a segment of an interview with CNN National Security Correspondent Kylie Atwood that aired on Friday’s broadcast of “CNN News Central,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concerns about China’s attempts to influence or interfere in the 2024 election despite warnings from President Joe Biden against such actions.
Blinken emphasized that President Biden clearly communicated the U.S. stance to President Xi, and Blinken reiterated the point in his recent meetings. He stated that any Chinese interference in U.S. elections is unacceptable and closely monitored. He also mentioned that, in general, the U.S. has warned China against interfering.
Atwood questioned Blinken about a reported commitment from President Xi to President Biden during their November meeting, where Xi allegedly assured Biden that China would not meddle in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. However, there have been reports of online Chinese accounts impersonating Trump supporters. Atwood asked Blinken if these actions violated Xi’s commitment.
Atwood asked whether China was violating its commitment, to which Blinken responded that while he needed to review the specific reports Atwood mentioned, there is evidence of attempts to influence and potentially interfere, and the U.S. aims to quickly put a stop to such efforts.
