President-elect Donald Trump hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend, signaling plans to strengthen ties with one of his closest ideological allies in Europe. During a Saturday dinner, Trump commended Meloni, 47, for having “taken Europe by storm.”
Meloni, elected in 2022, leads Italy’s conservative Brothers of Italy party. Her platform focuses on pro-family policies and tough stances on immigration—stances critics have labeled “far-right.” She rose to prominence amidst backlash against the Italian government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and has led her party since 2014.
Meloni’s coalition government is ideologically aligned with Trump, marking her as a key European partner. She has also cultivated a friendship with Elon Musk, a Trump ally who has visited Mar-a-Lago frequently since Election Day.
Immigration Policies
Italy, like the U.S., faces challenges related to illegal immigration. Migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Italy inspired Meloni’s “return hubs” policy, designed to prevent migrants from being released into Italian communities while their asylum requests are processed.
“It is a new, courageous, unprecedented path, but one that perfectly reflects the European spirit,” Meloni said of the policy in October.
Social Issues and Stability
On social matters, Meloni diverges from liberal European norms. Her government recently restricted parental rights for same-sex couples, granting full parental rights only to biological parents.
Despite Italy’s reputation for political instability, Meloni has kept her coalition government unified. Opposition leaders have struggled to rally support against her.
International Relations
Meloni’s ties to the U.S. could make her a bridge between the Trump administration and the European Union. Senator Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, was present during her visit to Mar-a-Lago, further emphasizing this partnership.
Meloni has also emerged as a prominent figure in Europe, hosting high-profile guests and forming connections with global leaders. Her appearance at Mar-a-Lago underscores her role as a critical player in future U.S.-EU relations.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Rome later this week to meet with Meloni and Pope Francis. According to the White House, Biden’s agenda includes thanking Meloni for her “strong leadership of the G7 over the past year” and reaffirming the U.S.-Italy relationship.
