What’s going on with CNN lately?
Recently, we saw CNN’s Erin Burnett spotlight Andrew Kaczynski’s detailed report on Kamala Harris’ controversial 2019 ACLU questionnaire responses, including her support for funding gender transition surgeries for detained illegal immigrants. That’s exactly the kind of journalism we need when Harris keeps flip-flopping, making it hard to pin down her current positions—especially in such a crucial election.
Now, Jake Tapper has also done some solid reporting. He pointed out how Harris dodged questions during the debate. According to Tapper, Harris started by “punting” the first question on the economy. When asked if Americans were better off, she went into a personal story about being a “middle-class kid” and claimed she was the only one on stage with a plan to help the middle class—but she didn’t specify what the plan was. It sounded a lot like Joe Biden’s frequent promises to lift up the middle class, even while inflation and border issues have hit them hard.
“It went on from there,” Tapper criticized. He added that, despite the economy being the top issue, Harris “mostly stuck to talking points about a few of her policy proposals.” Even her allies admit she needs to better explain what she plans to do for Americans if elected.
On the border, she dodged again, Tapper said. When asked by moderator David Muir how she would differ from Biden on border policy, Harris offered a generic answer about being the only one who prosecuted transnational criminals. “Ok,” Tapper replied, unimpressed. “That wasn’t the question.” In reality, Biden and Harris have enriched the very transnational criminals and gangs smuggling illegal immigrants, who have profited like never before, bringing in billions.
Tapper also questioned her answer on the Israel-Hamas conflict, where she said she’d work “around the clock” to secure a ceasefire and release the hostages. “Again, how?” Tapper pressed.
Tapper was also a moderator in the first debate where Joe Biden struggled, and CNN’s debate coverage was fairly balanced—certainly more so than the biased ABC debate. Even ABC reporters admitted Harris didn’t address key issues, and independent voters were left unsatisfied.
So, what’s happening with this critical reporting from CNN? It seems like some journalists there have real concerns with Harris, which is rare to see from mainstream media. Typically, they fall back into defending the Democrats. As Ed Morrissey from Hot Air pointed out, it’s not just that Harris wouldn’t answer questions during the debate—it’s that she avoids answering questions altogether. How can anyone elect a candidate like that?
