On Friday, Kathleen Parker, a columnist for the Washington Post, delivered a striking message to Vice President Kamala Harris, urging her to step aside. Parker characterized the vice president’s performance as disappointing and cautioned that she has become a burden to the Democratic ticket.
In her opinion piece titled “For the country’s sake, Vice President Harris should step aside,” Parker expressed her hope for Harris’s success but critiqued her performance during the first three years of the Biden Administration as lacking. Parker pointed out that Harris was selected because of her race and gender, which was seen as ensuring job security. However, Parker noted that Biden cannot dismiss her now without risking alienating his base, despite concerns about his own diminishing faculties.
Parker observed that Harris’s role seemed to be to remain quiet to avoid embarrassing her boss with her sometimes nonsensical remarks and inexplicable laughter. She emphasized her non-partisan perspective by recalling her call for Sarah Palin to step down in 2008.
Parker highlighted Harris’s unpopularity among voters and doubted that her approval ratings would improve if she were to assume the presidency. Therefore, she urged Harris to step away from the ticket for the country’s sake.
In early March, a joint poll by USA Today and Suffolk University revealed that Harris is more unpopular than both President Biden and former President Trump. The national survey data showed that approximately 52% of registered voters disapprove of her performance as vice president.
Harris recently expressed her readiness to serve in a media interview before the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents. She stated to The Wall Street Journal that she is fully prepared to lead, and those who observe her work recognize her capacity.
