President-elect Donald Trump has announced that the European Union could face tariffs if they fail to purchase significant quantities of U.S. oil and gas.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated:
“I told the European Union that they must make up their tremendous deficit with the United States by the large-scale purchase of our oil and gas. Otherwise, it is TARIFFS all the way!!!”
The European Union now joins the growing list of regions and nations Trump has warned with potential trade penalties under his incoming administration.
Tariff Threats Against BRICS Nations
Trump also recently cautioned BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE—against undermining the U.S. dollar.
“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” he wrote.
“We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.”
He added:
“They can go find another ‘sucker!’ There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in international trade, and any country that tries should wave goodbye to America.”
Mexico and Canada Also Warned
Trump’s warnings aren’t limited to international energy trade or BRICS currencies. Last month, following his election victory, Trump targeted Mexico and Canada with the threat of tariffs over border security.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing crime and drugs at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote.
“Right now a caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently open border.”
He pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, effective January 20, until both countries address issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
“This tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs, in particular fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
As Trump prepares to take office, his proposed policies continue to spark debate regarding U.S. trade and foreign relations.
