One common narrative against Donald Trump is the claim that his policies only benefit billionaires. Critics, like Vice President Kamala Harris in her campaign ads, often accuse Trump of favoring the wealthy. But recent actions challenge this narrative, as evidenced by a fundraiser he initiated to help everyday Americans impacted by Hurricane Helene.
On September 30, Trump authorized a GoFundMe campaign to provide relief to communities in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee devastated by the hurricane. The campaign raised more than $8 million, with contributions from nearly 50,000 donors across all 50 states and over 50 countries.
“President Trump’s Hurricane Helene fundraiser has emerged as the top fundraiser of the year on GoFundMe,” the platform noted in a statement reported by Fox Business. “The effort raised over $8 million to help communities impacted by the hurricane, thanks to immense support during this critical time.”
The GoFundMe page described the initiative:
“President Donald J. Trump has launched this GoFundMe campaign as an official response for MAGA supporters to offer their financial assistance to their fellow Americans impacted by Hurricane Helene. With so many across the Southeastern U.S. facing challenges after the storm, President Trump is on the ground in communities to see the aftermath firsthand. All donations will be directed to help those most affected by Hurricane Helene. Any level of generosity will go a long way for your fellow Americans who are suffering.”
According to an email from the Trump-Vance Transition Team, the funds raised are being distributed to various organizations, including Samaritan’s Purse, Water Mission, Mtn2Sea, the Clinch Foundation, and Sweetwater Mission.
President Trump also visited the affected areas multiple times to raise awareness of the destruction and provide moral support. During these trips, the former president highlighted gaps in government response, taking direct action to address the needs of devastated communities.
Hurricane Helene caused immense destruction in the Southeast, with economic losses estimated between $100 billion and $250 billion, according to Science.org. North Carolina alone accounted for $53 billion of the damage. While $8 million may seem small compared to the total impact, these funds aim to assist those who need it most.
“This was not only a testament to President Trump’s promise to put America First, but Americans’ willingness to come together and help one another,” the Trump-Vance Transition Team wrote. “Alongside President Trump, Americans across the country united to provide relief for these victims and their families.”
Though the road to recovery remains long, this initiative underscores the resilience and generosity of Americans willing to help their fellow citizens in times of crisis.
