President Trump on Friday reiterated his commitment to “clean up” crime-ridden cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and San Francisco by deploying federal law enforcement and potentially the National Guard, regardless of whether local officials agree.
“We have the safest place, Washington, DC, and we’ll be going to other cities to help out,” Trump said. “Preferably, we’d like to be asked, but in some cases, that just won’t happen because they’re people that don’t understand the word ask, people that don’t understand they’re in trouble, or they’re stupid.”
Trump made these remarks while hosting a dinner in the newly renovated Rose Garden with White House officials, members of Congress, and friends.
He emphasized that his plan would not only target Democratic-led states, pointing to “great” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and “great” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). “We’re going to come into New Orleans, and we’re going to make that place so safe. It’s got a little problem right now, a couple of headaches, like murders, a lot of little murders going on, and we’re not going to stand for it,” Trump said.
New Orleans is currently led by Democratic Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who is facing federal charges for wire fraud and obstruction of justice.
“And we’re going to come in, we’re going to clean it up. You’re going to be safe within two weeks. That’s going to be the safest place, just like this is the safest place,” Trump declared. “And then we’ll be going elsewhere throughout the country.”
Trump also compared crime in U.S. cities to war zones overseas: “You can go to Afghanistan. You can go to places that you think of are like unsafe. You’re safer there than you are in Chicago at night. But we’re going to make Chicago like this. We’re going to make Louisiana… and we’re going to come into New Orleans, and we’re going to make that place so safe.”
He stressed that the federal government would act to bring crime down: “We’re going to come in, we’re going to clean it up. You’re going to be safe within two weeks. That’s going to be the safest place, just like this is the safest place. And then we’ll be going elsewhere throughout the country. We’re going to bring crime down, because we can’t have cities that are unsafe.”
This comes as Chicago prepares for possible National Guard deployment, while Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson attempt to portray the city as safe despite ongoing violence.
At the same time, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that National Guard troops in the capital are “putting public safety at risk.”
Trump recently made similar statements about deploying federal agents and troops in Illinois and other high-crime cities such as Baltimore. “We have the right to do it because I have an obligation to protect this country,” he said.
