President Trump lashed out at Canada just minutes before meeting newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, setting a tense tone for their highly anticipated discussion amid ongoing trade tensions between the two nations.
“I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?” Trump posted on Truth Social moments before their meeting.
“That will be, most likely, my only question of consequence,” the president added.
Carney, meanwhile, has expressed his intention to focus on strengthening bilateral relations with the U.S. and finding ways to collaborate despite the ongoing tariff disputes.
“When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations,” Carney stated in his victory speech after winning the Canadian federal election on April 28.
Previously, Trump had mocked Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, referring to him as “governor” and suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state due to the financial support America provides.
