William Webster, the only person to have led both the FBI and the CIA, has issued a stern warning against President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet choices, particularly the nomination of Kash Patel as FBI director. Webster expressed concerns about Patel’s political alignment with Trump, questioning his ability to maintain impartiality and integrity.

In a letter, Webster urged lawmakers to intervene, emphasizing the need for nonpartisan leadership in critical national security positions. “Weigh the critical importance of nonpartisan leadership and experience,” Webster wrote, stressing that “the safety of the American people — and your own families — depends on it,” according to HuffPost.

Webster took particular aim at Patel, calling his close ties to Trump troubling. “While Mr. Patel’s intelligence and patriotism are commendable, his close political alignment with President Trump raises serious concerns about impartiality and integrity,” Webster noted. He further alleged that Patel’s history of loyalty to individuals over the law set a “dangerous precedent” for the FBI.

The former intelligence leader also criticized Trump’s choice of Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence, stating that her lack of experience in intelligence was a major liability. “Gabbard’s profound lack of intelligence experience and the daunting task of overseeing 18 disparate intelligence agencies further highlight the need for seasoned leadership,” he argued. Webster added that maintaining trust with allies and handling global threats effectively requires extensive expertise, warning that a failure in leadership could undermine international collaboration and the safeguarding of sensitive information.

Support from the Right

While critics like Webster have raised alarms, many on the right have praised Trump’s unconventional picks. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), speaking on Breitbart News Daily, voiced strong support for Patel.

“I’ve known Kash Patel about five years, and Kash is very smart, energetic, and deeply involved in law enforcement,” Tuberville said. “He’s worked in the DOD, DOJ, and traveled the world. He understands both domestic and international problems. He’ll be perfect.” Tuberville added that Patel would “shake it up” at the FBI and help restore public trust, criticizing Democrats for allegedly weaponizing the Department of Justice.

Lara Trump also praised her father-in-law’s choices, describing them as fighters. “They all have a certain amount of clarity and understand the vision for this country that Donald Trump has,” she said during an appearance on Breitbart News Daily.

“And they’re not likely people to be in a Republican cabinet, which is what I love most about it,” she added. “Donald Trump is not a typical politician, and his cabinet reflects that.”

GOP Confidence

Despite opposition, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) has expressed confidence in the Republican-controlled Senate’s ability to confirm Trump’s nominees. “I expect the Republican Senate to confirm all of President Trump’s nominees,” Cotton said earlier this month.

The debate over Trump’s cabinet choices underscores the ongoing battle between Trump’s allies and critics, with the president-elect continuing to champion outsider appointments that align with his vision for reshaping Washington.
