Authorities have detained a suspect linked to the shooting at Brown University that resulted in two deaths and nine injuries on Saturday.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that the city would lift its shelter-in-place order for the impacted area after the suspect was apprehended early Sunday morning.
“I want to express my deep gratitude to all the dedicated law enforcement personnel who worked tirelessly to reach this point, confirming the detention of a suspect,” Smiley remarked during a Sunday morning press briefing.
Smiley noted that Providence police, the FBI, and state police collaborated through Saturday night into Sunday morning to locate and apprehend the suspect. He also provided an update on the condition of the nine individuals injured, who are being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.
“Seven individuals are in stable condition, one is critical but stable, and one has been discharged,” Smiley reported.
Col. Oscar Perez of the Providence Police Department stated that the investigation is ongoing, describing it as an “all-hands-on-deck” effort. He mentioned that the suspect is in their 30s but did not disclose any connection to Brown University.
“We are currently coordinating with prosecutors, conducting interviews, and gathering evidence to maintain the integrity of the investigation and ensure accountability,” Perez added.
Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that the shooting took place during a final exam review for an economics class.
“The community is in shock, and we have significant recovery ahead. My primary objective in the coming days, weeks, and months is to reunite people and help them feel safe and secure on campus,” Paxson stated.

Governor Dan McKee (D-RI) announced that state police would remain vigilant to foster a sense of calm in the state. Mayor Smiley indicated that the increased police presence is intended for the “comfort and reassurance” of the Providence community and should not incite additional alarm.
“We’ll maintain our state police presence and continue collaborating with the city of Providence and Brown University to ensure all necessary measures are taken,” McKee said.
