The special prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, recently announced her resignation from the Rust case. Baldwin’s legal team had previously filed a motion requesting her removal, calling her position as a Republican lawmaker in the New Mexico House of Representatives “unconstitutional.” As you may or may not know, Baldwin faces two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the death of the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and has pleaded not guilty.
Reeb’s office released a statement, saying: “After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step down as special prosecutor in the Rust case. My priority in this case – and in every case I’ve prosecuted in my 25-year career – has been justice for the victim…I will not allow questions about my serving as a legislator and prosecutor to cloud the real issue at hand.” Prosecutors are not commenting further at this time and there has been no response yet from Baldwin’s attorney.
