Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner, backed by George Soros, has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk over his $1 million giveaway. Instead of focusing on Philadelphia’s crime surge, including rising carjackings and retail theft, Krasner is directing resources to take legal action against Musk. Musk recently pledged to give away $1 million daily until the November election for those who sign a petition in support of the U.S. Constitution. He kicked off this initiative at a Pennsylvania rally by awarding a $1 million check to attendee John Dreher.
Musk’s endorsement of President Trump has stirred up efforts to challenge him. Rick Hasen, a UC law professor and director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project, criticized Musk’s giveaway, calling the payments “clearly illegal.” Krasner labeled it “election interference” and described it as an “illegal lottery.”
“The Philadelphia District Attorney is charged with protecting the public from public nuisances and unfair trade practices, including illegal lotteries,” Krasner’s office said in a statement. They also emphasized, “The DA is also charged with protecting the public from interference with the integrity of elections.”
Krasner’s office clarified, “Today, the Philadelphia DA filed a civil legal action under Pennsylvania law. This civil action neither precludes nor requires potential future action under Pennsylvania criminal law. The Philadelphia DA will litigate the factual allegations and legal arguments that underlie today’s filing on the record and in court.”
