President Trump’s visit to Scotland for high-stakes trade negotiations didn’t stop him from injecting humor into the discussions—particularly when meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
While in the UK to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and hammer out a major trade agreement with the European Union, Trump also spent time at his Turnberry golf resort. There, he met with von der Leyen to discuss a potential EU-U.S. trade deal, after having previously warned her that tariffs on EU goods could hit 30% if no agreement was reached by August 1.
During their public remarks, von der Leyen complimented Trump on his negotiating skills, only to get a classic Trump-style response that had the entire room laughing.
“You’re known as a tough negotiator and dealmaker,” von der Leyen began before Trump quickly jumped in:
“And fair,” he said, prompting some chuckles.
“And fair,” she repeated.
“That’s less important,” Trump shot back—sending the room into full laughter.
.@vonderleyen: "You're known as a tough negotiator and dealmaker…"@POTUS: "And fair."

A deal was eventually struck that strongly favored the U.S. Von der Leyen may now understand what many already do: Trump tends to get what he’s after—sooner or later.
