Since his retirement nearly two years ago, Dr. Anthony Fauci has received $15 million in taxpayer-funded security services.
Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by watchdog group Open the Books reveal that Fauci, who stepped down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in December 2022, has continued to receive protection from the U.S. Marshals Service. This includes a security detail and chauffeur, all funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The arrangement, outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between HHS and the U.S. Marshals Service, covers the period from January 4, 2023, through September 20, 2024, with an option for extension.
According to the MOU, the $15 million cost includes salaries for security personnel, transportation expenses, and equipment—all for a private citizen no longer in government service.
