Texas Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett is contemplating a run for Republican Sen. John Cornyn’s U.S. Senate seat in the 2026 election.
The first-term congresswoman has attracted national attention for her controversial remarks and notable confrontations, including one with former President Donald Trump, who recently challenged her to an IQ test.
In a recent interview with Politico, Crockett stated that she is “seriously weighing” her candidacy and intends to invest heavily in polling to evaluate her chances statewide. She mentioned having multiple discussions with a prospective campaign manager, though she did not reveal their identity.
“I am seriously weighing it, to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data,” Crockett told Politico.
Crockett acknowledged the difficulties of gaining name recognition in Texas, particularly due to the state’s early primary and expensive campaign landscape.
“I don’t think that we have the luxury, especially with us having such an early primary, of actually doing what we normally do, which — we spend about $100 million to get someone’s name ID up,” she explained. “But the way that I look at elections is that that’s just first base.”
Despite her ambitions, Crockett expressed skepticism about any Democrat’s ability to defeat Cornyn.
“I’m going to be flat out with you and tell you that I don’t think that there’s a Democrat that can take out Cornyn,” she remarked. “For me, I would be making a very last-minute decision because it’s not just about winning the primary. You gotta win the general.”

ALERT: Jasmine Crockett, who faces potential redistricting out of her current seat by the Midterms, is considering a Senate run in Texas.
Thank you, Rep. Crockett, for helping us maintain our Senate Majority. Her chances in traditionally red Texas seem slim.

If she enters the race, Crockett would contend with a competitive Democratic primary featuring state Rep. James Talarico and former Rep. Colin Allred, with former Reps. Beto O’Rourke and Joaquin Castro also considering bids.
Crockett seeks to portray herself as an advocate for “vulnerable” populations, stating, “We don’t necessarily need all this machismo directed at some of the most vulnerable people. What we need is people that are going to be strong and fight for the most vulnerable amongst us. And I think that that is the brand that I have set out for myself, is that I want to fight for the American dream.”
Her potential Senate campaign follows a series of contentious statements and actions that have drawn criticism. She has compared ICE raids to “slave patrols,” claimed that committing crimes “doesn’t make you a criminal,” and faced backlash for remarks regarding a murder victim linked to illegal immigration.
Crockett has also made false claims about conservative figure Charlie Kirk after his assassination and described ICE as merely a “fancy Uber driver for immigrants.”
Recently, Trump humorously challenged her and Rep. AOC to an IQ test, branding them as “low IQ” while boasting about his cognitive test results.
Crockett countered by asserting that Trump’s comments reinforce stereotypes about women of color. “But he absolutely consistently buys into this idea, or continues to put it out there that women of color somehow are low IQ,” she said on CNN. “Let me be clear. I have a lot more education than he does.”
The congresswoman declined to participate in the IQ test challenge.
