On Saturday, Russia unleashed a barrage of 375 drones and 21 missiles on Ukraine, resulting in widespread power outages for millions during winter, according to Ukrainian officials. This assault coincided with the second day of trilateral peace talks involving Ukrainian, Russian, and American diplomats in Abu Dhabi.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed outrage on X, stating, “Peace efforts? Trilateral meeting in the UAE? Diplomacy? For Ukrainians, this was another night of Russian terror. Cynically, Putin ordered a brutal massive missile strike against Ukraine right while delegations are meeting in Abu Dhabi to advance the America-led peace process. His missiles hit not only our people, but also the negotiation table.”
The missile strikes targeted key areas, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Officials reported that the main focus of the assault was civilian electrical infrastructure and residential neighborhoods.

The peace discussions in Abu Dhabi are based on a collaborative 20-point peace plan developed by the United States and Ukraine. Key topics may include territorial control in the Donbas, a region that has seen significant conflict throughout the war, which remains a critical issue for both parties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on X, “The central focus of the discussions was the possible parameters for ending the war. I highly value the understanding of the need for American monitoring and oversight of the process of ending the war and ensuring genuine security.”
Zelensky also noted, “Our delegation delivered a report; the meetings in the UAE have concluded. This was the first format of this kind in quite some time: two days of trilateral meetings. A lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive.”

Attending the meeting were Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who traveled to Abu Dhabi from Moscow after engaging in talks with the Kremlin. Ukraine sent its top diplomatic team, including Zelensky’s new chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov.
On Friday, Zelensky criticized European nations at Davos for their failure to adequately address Russia’s threat to continental security and for not strengthening their military forces.
During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 22, 2026, Zelensky urged Europe to double its military size by 2030 to counter a potential Russian force of 2.5 million troops. He remarked, “Europe loves to discuss the future, but avoids taking action today, action that defines what kind of future we will have. That is the problem,” comparing discussions with European leaders about military enhancements to the film Groundhog Day.
Ukraine has been subjected to a wave of Russian attacks on its power grid this winter, mirroring previous years of conflict. When asked about past Russian assaults on Ukrainian electrical infrastructure, Witkoff remarked, “Well, first of all, they’re in a war, and so they’re shooting at each other. And we don’t condone that. We think it’s unfortunate.”
