Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was interrupted by anti-Israel students during a speech in the U.K. on Thursday. A protest group also labeled her a “warmonger.”
As Pelosi, the former House speaker, began her address to the Oxford Union at the University of Oxford, a student quietly stood up and walked to the front of the room. He then displayed a Palestinian flag and faced the audience, obstructing their view of the 84-year-old California congresswoman.
“Warmongers like Nancy Pelosi are not welcome on university campuses,” said Youth Demand, who took credit for the protest, in a later post on X, sharing a video of the incident.
The student, joined by a second protester, was met with boos and was asked by audience members to sit down as the protest unfolded.
Despite the interruption, Pelosi continued her remarks, advocating for peace in Gaza.
“The suffering of Gaza must stop,” the Democratic lawmaker said, according to the Telegraph. “We want peace on both sides. Both sides must agree to it.”
The Telegraph reported that the two protesters stood in front of the podium but were eventually escorted out by police. The audience seemed to applaud their removal.
Youth Demand stated in their post that “when children are being murdered, and hospitals are being bombed, we will not sit down and be quiet while these people are given platforms.”
On Monday, Pelosi visited University College Dublin, where she received the Sutherland Leadership Award. During her visit, students protested outside the university.
This interruption follows a series of demonstrations at elite U.S. colleges and universities, where anti-Israel encampments have called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.
