As the gubernatorial race in New Jersey heats up between Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli and Democratic challenger Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), former President Barack Obama has stepped in to endorse Sherrill. This move has been described by some political analysts as a “desperate” effort to uplift the Democrat candidate amid declining poll numbers.
Continuing his trend of endorsing candidates in key off-year elections, Obama narrated an advertisement promoting Sherrill’s campaign. The ad aligns with Sherrill’s messaging, featuring standard visuals of her interacting with constituents and showcasing her military background.
Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, has prominently featured her military service in her campaign. However, her candidacy has been marred by a scandal related to her alleged involvement in a cheating incident during her time at the U.S. Naval Academy. She claims that she was barred from attending her graduation for not reporting fellow students involved in the scandal, yet has not released her disciplinary records from that period.
In the ad, Obama states, “Hey, New Jersey. This is Barack Obama, and I want to talk to you about my friend, Mikie Sherrill. Mikie is a mom who will drive down costs for New Jersey families. As a federal prosecutor and former Navy helicopter pilot, she worked to keep our communities safe. Mikie’s integrity, grit, and commitment to service are what we need right now in our leaders. Mikie Sherrill is the right choice for your next governor. So go vote by November 4th.”
Ciattarelli dismissed the ad as a distraction in an interview with Fox News, stating, “What I concern myself with is getting up and down the state each and every day and engaging with New Jerseyans. The fact that we’ve got prominent Democrats endorsing my candidacy says something. We’re going to win,” referencing various endorsements his campaign has received from elected Democrats.
Some analysts believe Obama’s endorsement signals rising anxiety within Sherrill’s camp, as enthusiasm seems to be favoring Ciattarelli and poll numbers tighten. Conservative election activist Scott Pressler remarked on X, “Democrats are PETRIFIED that they’re going to lose New Jersey. They’re so scared that they made Obama endorse Mikie ‘Cheating Scandal’ Sherrill.”
Political strategist Chris Russell suggested that the endorsement reflects a “lack of enthusiasm” for Sherrill’s campaign, which he described as “arrogant” and out of touch. He argued that seeking support from figures like Obama and Hillary Clinton, who recently fundraised for Sherrill, indicates vulnerability, as these endorsements may not resonate with working-class New Jersey voters concerned about Democratic policies on costs and safety.
This situation mirrors Obama’s previous endorsement patterns, such as his late support for Terry McAuliffe’s unsuccessful 2021 Virginia campaign, which analysts attributed to polling declines. Recently, Obama has also faced scrutiny for his involvement in former Vice President Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful presidential run, which included high-cost pre-rally concerts aimed at creating an illusion of widespread support.
