An upstate New York congresswoman is advocating for President Trump’s birthday to become a federal holiday.
GOP U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney has introduced legislation to merge the existing annual Flag Day commemoration with the president’s birthday, creating a new combined holiday to be celebrated on June 14. She called Trump “the most consequential President in modern American history.”
“From brokering the historic Abraham Accords to championing the largest tax relief package in American history, his impact on the nation is undeniable,” the Finger Lakes region Republican said in a release last week.
“Just as George Washington’s Birthday is codified as a federal holiday, this bill will add Trump’s Birthday to this list, recognizing him as the founder of America’s Golden Age,” Tenney said.
“By designating Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day as a federal holiday, we can ensure President Trump’s contributions to American greatness and the importance of the American Flag are forever enshrined into law.”
June 14 has been celebrated as Flag Day since President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation in 1916 declaring it as the day to honor the Stars and Stripes. The holiday was officially established through an act of Congress in August 1949.
Trump was born on June 14, 1946, making the date a natural choice for a new combined holiday, according to Tenney.
“No modern president has been more pivotal for our country than Donald J. Trump,” she said in her press release. “As both our 45th and 47th president, he is the most consequential president in modern American history, leading our country at a time of great international and domestic turmoil.”
Tenney, a former state assembly member, was elected to the 24th Congressional District in 2016.
