Massie Critiques Trump’s Epstein Investigation as a ‘Desperate Attempt’ to Block File Releases

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) criticized President Donald Trump on Sunday for supporting additional investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, claiming these efforts are merely a “last-ditch attempt” to prevent the public release of more information about the deceased financier.

“The president’s been saying this is a hoax. He’s been saying that for months. Well, he’s just now decided to investigate a hoax, if it’s a hoax,” Massie stated in an ABC interview, referring to Trump’s recent directive for the Department of Justice and FBI to examine Epstein’s connections to prominent Democrats.

The Kentucky congressman expressed concern that Trump’s investigations could hinder his efforts in the House to compel the Justice Department to disclose more files related to Epstein.

“If they have ongoing investigations in certain areas, those documents can’t be released. So this might be a big smokescreen, these investigations, to open a bunch of them as a last-ditch effort to prevent the release of the Epstein files,” Massie added.

The House is scheduled to vote this week on a measure to mandate the government release more Epstein-related files, following Massie’s leadership in a successful bipartisan initiative that utilized a discharge petition to secure the vote.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced plans to proceed with the vote after Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) became the 218th member to endorse the petition, achieving the requisite number of signatures.

On Sunday, Johnson indicated that the vote aims to dispel rumors regarding Epstein’s alleged connections to Trump, asserting, “They’re doing this to go after President Trump on this theory that he has something to do with it. He does not.”

Johnson added, “Epstein is their entire game plan, so we’re going to take that weapon out of their hands. Let’s just get this done and move it on. There’s nothing to hide.”

The Trump administration has raised concerns that the wording in Massie’s Epstein Files Transparency Act may not sufficiently protect victims of Epstein’s sexual abuse. Johnson has dismissed the petition as irrelevant, citing ongoing investigations by other committees, including the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has already released thousands of documents.

Trump has criticized Massie and other lawmakers supporting the discharge petition, arguing that the Justice Department’s investigation into Epstein has been transparent. In a recent statement, he remarked, “The Democrats are doing everything in their withering power to push the Epstein Hoax again, despite the DOJ releasing 50,000 pages of documents, in order to deflect from all of their bad policies and losses.”

Massie, on Sunday, countered allegations that he was pursuing unsubstantiated leads in the Epstein investigation, suggesting that individuals involved in Trump-backed efforts were trying to undermine him politically in Kentucky.

“Dogs don’t bark at parked cars,” he said. “He’s being a bully or trying to be a bully, and they’re trying to beat me here in Kentucky.”

Meanwhile, speculation is rising in Congress regarding Epstein’s potential links to the intelligence community. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) suggested that Epstein may have had associations with the Israeli government, referencing emails she claims the House Oversight Committee recently released, which allegedly show Epstein’s connections to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Trump, who distanced himself from Epstein after the financier faced serious legal charges, previously acknowledged their acquaintance in a 2002 New York Magazine profile, stating, “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy.”

Many figures linked to Epstein, including Trump and the Clintons, have denied any knowledge of inappropriate conduct involving minors.
