Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has been revealed to have promoted political violence and Communism through a series of now-deleted Reddit posts.
The 41-year-old oyster farmer and Marine veteran, who is challenging longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins, attempted to erase his online history just before announcing his campaign in August 2025.
However, archived posts depict him as deeply involved in socialist ideology, advocating for armed uprisings and disparaging police as “bastards.”
Platner, presenting himself as a self-styled outsider focused on the working class of Maine, used the username “P-Hustle” in left-wing forums like r/SocialistRA and r/politics from 2018 to 2021.
In one provocative post, he encouraged leftists to “Get Armed, Get Organized. The Other Side Sure As Hell Is.”
In another, he advised militant leftists to acquire semi-automatic rifles, cautioning, “if they expect to fight fascism without a good semi-automatic rifle, they ought to do some reading of history.”
Platner also echoed the sentiments of socialist Eugene V. Debs, stating, “An armed working class is a requirement for economic justice.”
He openly identified as a communist, remarking, “I got older and became a communist.”
Graham Platner, the Maine Democrat running for Senate as a rugged, independent-minded “oyster man,” had his Reddit posts uncovered by @KFILE.

Platner also consistently criticized law enforcement, asserting that “all” police are bastards and expressing his anger with statements like, “F**k these cops” in reaction to police-related incidents.
His contempt extended to rural white Americans, whom he described as “racist and stupid.”
Despite this controversy, Platner has raised over $4 million and received endorsements from several progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, who campaigned with him on Labor Day.
The Maine Senate race is a significant battleground that could influence control of the chamber.
In a statement to Politico, the senate hopeful expressed, “As I told CNN, I was f-cking around on the internet at a time when I felt lost and very disillusioned with our government who sent me overseas to watch my friends die. I made dumb jokes and picked fights. But of course I’m not a socialist. I’m a small business owner, a Marine Corps veteran, and a retired sh-tposter.”
Platner also posted a video to X addressing the controversy, attributing his erratic comments to his military service.

Platner is competing against Maine’s 77-year-old Governor Janet Mills in the Democrat primary. If elected, she would become the oldest freshman senator in history.
The candidate’s statements draw parallels to the alarming revelations about Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones, another Democrat whose private messages called for violent actions against a Republican lawmaker and his family.
These incidents raise concerns about a trend among left-wing candidates harboring violent ideologies behind moderate appearances, questioning their suitability for office in a time already marked by political violence and unrest.
