Israel has reopened the Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt as part of the second phase of the ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with his security cabinet to discuss the crossing. Shortly after, his office announced that it would be reopened on a “limited basis.”

According to Netanyahu’s office, “As part of President Trump’s 20-point plan, Israel has agreed to open the Rafah crossing on a limited basis for the passage of people only, with a full Israeli oversight mechanism.”
A key issue remains the return of the last remains of hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Netanyahu emphasized that the reopening is contingent upon the return of all living hostages and Hamas’s commitment to locate and return all deceased hostages.
Hamas had released all living hostages last year, but one remains unaccounted for.

Prior to Netanyahu’s announcement, the Israel Defense Forces conducted a “targeted operation” aimed at retrieving the body of Ran Gvili, the last remaining hostage, whose remains are still believed to be in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF reported that they were searching “in the area of the Yellow Line in northern Gaza.”
