In 2009, when the Iranian populace protested against their oppressors, Barack Obama remained silent. Fast forward to 2022, and Joe Biden’s administration funneled billions to those very oppressors. In contrast, Donald Trump took a different stance.
On January 2, Trump stated: “If Iran shots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J.TRUMP.”

As the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps escalated their violence against peaceful demonstrators, Trump followed up on January 13, saying: “Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The Iranian people placed their trust in him, continuing their protests despite increasing casualties, which reached as high as 20,000. They named streets in his honor, believing he would deliver the promised support to dismantle the oppressive regime that has claimed countless lives since 1979. They felt they had a leader who listened to their cries.

However, by Wednesday afternoon, the situation appeared to shift. Trump announced: “We have been told that the killing in Iran is stopping, it’s stopped, it is stopping. And, uh, there’s no plan for executions, or ex— an execution, or executions. So I’ve been told that on good authority, we’ll find out about it.”

This statement raised doubts, and it was uncertain if Trump believed it himself. The Islamic Republic thrives on terror, adhering to the Qur’an’s directive to “strike terror in the enemies of Allah” (8:60). As long as the Islamic Republic exists, the violence against protesters will likely continue.
Despite Trump’s puzzling comments, that evening, it seemed the regime might be on the brink of collapse. The mullahs cleared Iranian airspace in anticipation of an attack, and protesters envisioned their liberation. The world waited anxiously.
However, the anticipated event did not occur. The Islamic Republic remained intact, and airspace was reopened, allowing the mullahs to breathe easily.
On Thursday morning, Trump attempted to express optimism: “FoxNews: ‘Iranian protester will no longer be sentenced to death after President Trump’s warnings. Likewise others.’ This is good news. Hopefully, it will continue!”

Unless this was a strategic ruse, as some allege, and an attack is still forthcoming, it appears the Islamic Republic will persist, concealing its atrocities from the public eye. Trump’s promise of assistance has, thus far, yielded no tangible results, and his encouragement of the protests has led to the deaths of 20,000 individuals.
Moreover, reports suggest that Trump canceled a planned attack at the last moment under pressure from Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia—three Sunni nations that view the Shi’ite Islamic Republic of Iran as an adversary, yet their concern for U.S. interests should not be assumed.
On Thursday, Reza Amiri Moghadam, Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, claimed that Trump had communicated to the Iranian government that the U.S. would not launch an attack.
If this is accurate, and no attack materializes, Trump’s assurances to the protesters may be remembered as one of the most significant betrayals in modern history. The repercussions could extend beyond the survival of the oppressive regime in Tehran. If no military action occurs, Trump will have unwittingly provided his adversaries with a potent weapon against him.
After facing attempts to frame him for unfounded crimes and even threats to his life, Trump’s opponents—who have seen their agendas thwarted by him—will be able to cite his promises to the Iranian people as evidence that he is untrustworthy. They may argue that he is a man of empty words, and in this instance, those empty threats resulted in the deaths of 20,000 individuals.
In a tragic twist, Trump may have inadvertently armed his enemies, who he has countered in various areas, with the means to undermine him and his movement. His hollow threats could lead to a significant victory for the socialist internationalist authoritarians who aspire to transform the U.S. into a socialist state. Ultimately, he may not have merely betrayed the Iranian people.
