Home Secretary James Cleverly Says His Top Aide Called the Rwanda Scheme ‘Crap’ Just for Dramatic Effect

Home Secretary James Cleverly has stated that his top aide only called the Rwanda scheme “crap” for dramatic effect. James Sunderland, the Tory MP for Bracknell, criticized the government’s immigration policy to catch the audience’s attention, according to Cleverly.

Sunderland, speaking at a private event in April, used the term twice but later defended the policy as an effective deterrent. Cleverly, after reviewing the recording, clarified that Sunderland’s remarks were intended to shock and draw focus and affirmed his support for the policy’s deterrent impact.

During an April meeting with Young Conservatives, Sunderland emphasized that the plan, praised by the Prime Minister as a key differentiator between the Tories and Labour, was more about its effects rather than the policy itself.

He argued that the policy’s success lies in its broader impact, suggesting that its implementation would deter channel crossings by shocking criminal gangs.

When questioned about his remarks, Sunderland clarified he was discussing reactions to the policy and saw it as part of a larger strategy.

Last year, Cleverly avoided denying reports that he had privately described the Rwanda policy in derogatory terms, stating he couldn’t recall using such language but had expressed frustration with the policy’s singular focus. He stressed that the Rwanda scheme is one component of a broader response, including international returns agreements.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper criticized the scheme, labeling it an expensive and ineffective gimmick.
