Vice President Kamala Harris pledged $1.5 billion to Ukraine, focusing on energy assistance, emergency infrastructure repairs, and humanitarian support.
While attending the Summit on Peace in Ukraine in Lucerne, Switzerland, she met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced the funding allocation: $500 million for energy, $324 million for sector repairs, and $379 million for food, water, and health services for Ukrainians.
Harris emphasized the ongoing failure of the war for Russian President Vladimir Putin and underscored the importance of upholding international norms. She criticized Putin’s recent proposal, stating it was a call for surrender, not negotiations.
Earlier this year, in April, the House approved The Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, allocating $60.84 billion to support Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. President Zelensky also recently met with President Joe Biden at the G7 Summit.
Three weeks ago, President Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine still maintains combat control of the Kharkiv region, despite earlier Russian invasions. The region, including Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, saw 11,000 people evacuate to escape Russian troops entering Vovchansk.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to hold the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson regions, even conducting elections earlier this year where President Putin was reelected.
