The head of the House select committee Wisconsin GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher said that China sending a spy balloon over the US was not just a coincidence. Rep. Gallagher, thinks that the balloon was sent to show the US President, Joe Biden, what China can get away with.
People in the US have been worried since they saw the balloon moving through different states, as it was flying low enough to be seen with the naked eye. Another strange object was shot down in Alaska and the Canadian Prime Minister even had an object removed from their airspace. It’s not clear yet if all of these objects are related to the spy balloon.
Rep. Gallagher doesn’t believe China’s excuse that it was just a weather balloon that got lost, and thinks it was no coincidence that it was seen near a military base in Montana while the US Secretary of State was visiting China. He thinks the balloon was meant to send a message to the US, and says it’s part of China’s plan to humiliate the US on the world stage.
The US military thinks the balloon was part of a big Chinese surveillance program that was trying to gather information about other countries’ military abilities. This is actually the second time a suspected Chinese spy balloon has crossed US airspace during the Biden administration.
Rep. Gallagher is upset that the US House intelligence committee hasn’t been given a briefing on the incident, and thinks the US was caught off guard. Another Republican lawmaker, Rep. Matt Rosendale, was told about something interfering with airspace over his district, but the US military said it was just a false alarm.
