Google has yet to act on President Trump’s executive order to rename Denali back to Mount McKinley, issued during his first hours in office. While the search giant recently updated the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, Denali remains unchanged on Google Maps and its search engine as of Saturday.
The executive order mandates the interior secretary to implement the new names within 30 days and update the federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), a database maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
“We’ll update when the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated,” a Google spokeswoman said. A GNIS representative confirmed the name change was “not yet complete” but expected it to be finalized within the “time period given by the” executive order.
The Alaskan mountain was originally named for William McKinley in 1896, a year before he became president. McKinley was assassinated in 1901, and the name remained for over a century until former President Obama changed it to Denali in 2015 following pressure from indigenous tribes in the area.
