Former Trump defense attorney Bill Brennan expressed his concerns on Monday regarding the potential for politically biased individuals to serve on the jury in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan.
During an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN, Brennan discussed the challenges faced by Trump’s legal team in ensuring a fair trial for the former president.
Reflecting on his experience with Judge Merchan, Brennan acknowledged the judge’s professionalism and courtesy but refrained from commenting on potential biases. He emphasized the difficulty of identifying jurors prejudiced against Trump, citing an example of a prospective juror who openly expressed disdain for the former president.
Despite the juror’s negative sentiments, Brennan was surprised when Judge Merchan didn’t immediately dismiss her from the selection process. The judge asked if she could set aside her feelings and be fair if instructed in the law, to which she agreed, a response Brennan attributed to the courtroom setting.
Brennan highlighted the challenge of identifying jurors with ulterior motives, particularly those who remain silent during questioning. He expressed concern about jurors seeking to settle personal scores, emphasizing the need for a rigorous selection process to ensure a fair trial for Trump.
