Angela Walker, who was convicted of manslaughter for the brutal killing of a Canadian tourist, secured a City Council position in Bangor, Maine, during the elections held on Tuesday. Walker’s victory was reported alongside fellow progressive candidates Susan Faloon and Daniel Carson.
Currently serving as the peer services coordinator for the Bangor Area Recovery Network, Walker is also noted to be in recovery from addiction. Despite her troubled history, voters chose to overlook her past, granting her legislative power.
Walker was imprisoned for 10 years following her conviction in 2003 for the shocking murder of Derek Rogers, who she claimed had used a racist slur against her. Rogers was found severely beaten and suffocated with sand on August 1, 2002, at Ocean Park in Old Orchard Beach.
This election outcome raises concerns about the trend of voters supporting individuals with violent backgrounds. In a related note, Jay Jones, a Democratic candidate for Virginia Attorney General, also faced scrutiny for his disturbing comments regarding violence against political opponents.
The implications of such elections reflect a growing acceptance of radical ideologies within local governance.
