Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth engaged in a live virtual interview with “Fox and Friends” from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. (DoD photo by U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Alexander Kubitza).
Secretary Hegseth has been vocal about his commitment to reforming the Pentagon and holding accountable those who align with the so-called Deep State.
As reported by The Gateway Pundit, President Donald Trump announced during a press conference with Japan’s prime minister that he had tasked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with conducting a thorough audit of Pentagon funding. The Pentagon has failed multiple audits in recent years.
“Yes, I have [directed Musk to review] Pentagon, Education, just about everything,” Trump stated.
Later that day, Hegseth pledged to ensure the Pentagon passes a clean audit within four years.
“The American taxpayers deserve that,” he emphasized. “They deserve to know where their $850 billion dollars go, how it’s spent, and make sure it’s spent wisely.”
However, Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin appeared displeased with Hegseth’s efforts to reform the Pentagon, which could potentially expose some of her sources. Griffin, a long-time critic of Trump and a staunch ally of the Washington establishment, has often been at odds with the Trump administration.
On Friday afternoon, Griffin amplified a Democrat-led critique of Hegseth, aiming to undermine his and the Trump administration’s efforts to save taxpayer dollars through DOGE. House Democrats had recently sent a letter questioning Hegseth’s use of $137,297 for home repairs and painting at his government residence.
“Dems on House Appropriations Committee ask why Sec Hegseth needs $137,297 for home repairs/paint for government residence, in light of DOGE efforts to save tax-payer money?” Griffin posted on X, sharing the letter.
Hegseth quickly responded, clarifying that the repairs were necessary regardless of who occupied the residence and were initiated by the Department of Defense.
“Fake News of the Day (not surprising from Democrats & @JenGriffinFNC; same thing),” Hegseth wrote. “Any/all house repairs were going to happen no matter who was moving in—and were all initiated by DoD.”
He added, “But Dems/Jen don’t care about facts; they’re just Trump haters.”

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the Trump administration and its critics, setting the stage for a contentious yet dynamic next four years.
