Former Obama advisor David Axelrod expressed frustration with President Biden’s economic approach, particularly when Biden attempted to highlight the strength of the economy despite ongoing challenges faced by Americans. Axelrod criticized the strategy during an appearance on Bill Kristol’s podcast, suggesting it wouldn’t be effective.
Axelrod referenced Biden’s Easter interview with Al Roker, where the president touted the economy as the strongest in the world, which Axelrod deemed as the wrong approach. He argued that Biden should empathize with working-class concerns instead.
Axelrod emphasized that Biden should align himself with working people’s economic struggles, drawing from his own upbringing in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He advised Biden to focus on addressing everyday concerns such as grocery costs, rent, and gas prices.
Regarding Biden’s electoral prospects, Axelrod suggested the president consider whether it was wise to continue his campaign, especially considering trailing polling numbers against former President Trump, particularly in key swing states.
Axelrod stressed the importance of Biden connecting with working-class voters, advising him to adopt a more relatable approach, akin to “Joe from Scranton,” rather than appearing detached as “President Biden from Washington.”
Axelrod’s critique aligns with earlier reports of Biden allegedly referring to him as a “pr—” in private conversations, indicative of internal tensions within the Biden camp regarding campaign strategy.
