A Democratic county official in Texas made the choice to switch parties on Saturday, citing border security policies and support for law enforcement as her main reasons for the transition.
Kira Talip Sanchez, who serves as the Attorney for Kleberg County, confirmed her decision to join the GOP in a statement provided to Fox News. She addressed the Hispanic Republicans of Texas PAC during their 2024 election season kickoff event.
Kleberg County, situated along the Gulf of Mexico in southern Texas, has historically leaned towards the Democratic party. Nonetheless, the county voted for former President George W. Bush in both 2000 and 2004, and supported former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
Sanchez pointed to the “unprecedented” border crisis as a significant factor motivating her switch. In her statement, she highlighted her collaboration with law enforcement to ensure the safety of Kleberg County’s residents.
Sanchez expressed that the Republican Party’s emphasis on law and order, the protection of safety, and support for law enforcement align better with her values and the values of Kleberg County’s citizens.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues to keep South Texas safe,” Sanchez added.
Over the past few months, numerous lawmakers from around the country have departed from the Democratic party. One notable example is Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), who left the party at the end of 2022. Since then, many Democrat lawmakers have changed their party affiliation to either Independent or Republican.
Texas Republicans have been highly critical of the federal government’s response to the border crisis, contending that President Joe Biden’s policies have been ineffective or neglectful.
Governor Greg Abbott has taken matters into his own hands by implementing a floating buoy barrier in the Rio Grande, asserting its necessity to combat the influx of illegal immigrants. However, this action has resulted in a lawsuit from the Department of Justice.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported on Friday that there were 183,503 migrant encounters at the southern border in July, a significant rise from the 144,566 encounters seen in June.
Cassy Garcia, President of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, stated that she is “excited” to continue reaching out to Democratic voters throughout the state.
She argued that the Democratic Party has become too radical, elitist, and disconnected from their values, leading many long-standing Democratic voters to reevaluate their political allegiances.
