Comcast has announced plans to restructure its corporate oversight of NBCUniversal, a move with significant implications for networks like MSNBC and CNBC.
MSNBC, in particular, has faced heightened scrutiny over the past year. A producer at the network openly admitted to its sharp shift to the left, a move that coincided with a drop in interest in left-wing media following the presidential election.
Under the new corporate structure, MSNBC and CNBC will technically be owned by separate entities within the Comcast umbrella. Essentially, Comcast is transferring the networks to a newly created company, separating them from the rest of its content portfolio.
This shake-up has sparked lively speculation about a potential sale of MSNBC. Social media has been abuzz with ideas about the network’s future, particularly involving its high-profile figures like Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow. Donald Trump Jr. even suggested Elon Musk should purchase the network, calling it the “funniest idea ever.”
Musk, known for his surprising business moves, fueled the conversation by responding to Trump Jr. on X (formerly Twitter), asking, “How much is it?” He later added, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely,” hinting at possible interest.
Rachel Maddow has already taken a $5 million pay cut as MSNBC struggles to retain its audience. Musk’s potential involvement has led to further speculation about significant personnel changes at the network should such a deal materialize.
Observers were quick to draw parallels to Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, which began as a seemingly offhand comment and ended in a major purchase.
