While several predominantly blue states are still finalizing their vote tallies, early data shows that Donald Trump gained votes in every state, including the District of Columbia, in the 2024 election.
Twitter user Christian Heiens compiled the raw vote shift data from 2020 to 2024, providing a clear picture of a red wave. To clarify, the “raw vote shift” measures the change in vote totals for Trump compared to 2020. For example, if Trump won a state by 100,000 votes in 2020 and by 500,000 in 2024, the raw vote shift would be 400,000.
Three states experienced shifts of over one million votes to Trump:
• California (+1,909,237*)
• New York (+1,067,560*)
• Florida (+1,055,401)
Texas, once considered a potential battleground due to demographic changes, moved further to the right, with a shift of +937,681 votes to Trump.
Even liberal-leaning states saw significant shifts:
• New Jersey (+473,580 votes for Trump), where the margin narrowed to just under six points, making it as competitive as Arizona.
• Illinois (+413,340*)
• Massachusetts (+377,390*)
In swing states:
• Michigan (+234,291 votes for Trump)
• Pennsylvania (+201,972)
• Arizona (+197,839)
Additional states with shifts over 100,000 votes:
• Tennessee: +200,696
• Virginia: +190,832
• Maryland: +166,582*
• Ohio: +164,907*
• South Carolina: +161,733
• Georgia: +126,879
• Connecticut: +111,092*
• North Carolina: +108,565
States with shifts below 100,000 votes include:
• Alabama: +96,767
• Minnesota: +95,065
• Colorado: +89,220
• Iowa: +82,567
• Nevada: +79,604
• Wisconsin: +50,079
Trump also gained votes in deep-blue strongholds like Washington (+69,916), Oregon (+64,520*), and even the District of Columbia (+30,367*).
Some of the smaller shifts occurred in already deep-red states such as Wyoming (+3,038). However, the broad trend underscores a nationwide move toward Trump across nearly every demographic and region.
