Written by Victor Davis Hanson for American Greatness,

From the recent off-year elections, it is evident that iconic contests in traditionally Democratic strongholds yielded expected results favoring the Democratic Party.

However, with just a year remaining before the midterms, Republicans must respond to these modest outcomes.

1) The Democrats’ chaotic nihilism remains effective.

The chaos strategy generates significant disruption, confusion, and negative media attention, making it difficult for voters to discern the underlying issues. As a result, the public often directs its frustration at the current authorities, primarily President Trump and his administration.

2) Trump’s first year was marked by daily turmoil.

Throughout Trump’s initial year, incidents such as campus protests, violent attacks against ICE, and erratic judicial rulings were rampant. The chaos was amplified by extreme rhetoric from figures like AOC, Jasmine Crockett, Eric Swalwell, and other members of the Squad.

A recent example includes a distressed Nancy Pelosi, who declared on CNN that President Trump is “just a vile creature, the worst thing on the face of the Earth.” The public, overwhelmed by such madness, associates the chaos primarily with “Trump.” Notably, there is a lack of a positive Democratic agenda akin to a “Contract with America,” as the party struggles to promote anything that resonates beyond its socialist base.

3) The chaos strategy targets crucial voter demographics.

In the latest elections, Republicans recognized the intent behind the pre-election shutdown, which aimed to mobilize key voter groups during a low-turnout period. This shutdown particularly affected laid-off and unpaid government workers, as well as entitlement recipients concerned about their benefits. These groups disproportionately turned out in Virginia and New Jersey.

The Democrats may soon resolve the shutdown, as its initial impact on voter mobilization is waning. The same tactic is being used to regain support from Hispanic voters who had shifted towards Trump in 2024; recent elections showed a partial return of Hispanic support to the Democratic Party.

Misconceptions persist, with many unaware that 70-80 percent of deportations target individuals with criminal histories or previous deportation orders. Instead, ongoing protests, threats of nullification from blue-city officials, and biased media portrayals have painted ICE as a repressive force. Many in the public mistakenly believe that only law-abiding individuals are being pursued for deportation, perpetuating a false narrative.

The administration and MAGA supporters need to communicate positive economic news, such as GDP growth, manageable inflation, significant foreign investment, and peaceful developments in the Middle East. However, in the absence of such self-promotion, sensational narratives about Trump’s actions have dominated the conversation.

4) Much of Trump’s agenda is long-term.

Many aspects of Trump’s policy initiatives, aside from military recruitment and border security, require time to yield results. Multitrillion-dollar foreign investments may take years to create jobs and stimulate growth, while deportations will gradually shift job opportunities to U.S. citizens. New energy production initiatives and regulatory changes will not produce immediate effects.

Even Ronald Reagan faced challenges post-convention, trailing Walter Mondale in polls before the economy surged with significant GDP growth leading up to the election.

5) The Democratic Party has transformed.

The current Democratic Party is an unabashedly neo-socialist movement. Traditional negative advertising aimed at scandal does not hold the same weight; what matters now is the hard-left ideology of candidates.

Threats against political opponents? Claims of violence? Promises of radical change? To the new left, these actions demonstrate commitment and resolve, rendering them impervious to shame.

Republicans have time to analyze these results, particularly regarding the strategy and the volatile nature of swing voters, while focusing on economic issues.

But time is of the essence.
