ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is facing criticism for promoting a false narrative that Tyler Robinson, the alleged shooter in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is a supporter of the ‘MAGA’ movement.
Kimmel remarked, “We had some new lows over the weekend, with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” without presenting any evidence to back up the claim regarding the gunman’s political views.
He added, “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism. But on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this,” before playing a clip to suggest that former President Trump was indifferent to Kirk’s murder. Kimmel stated, “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay?”
Kimmel is not the only high-profile figure to suggest that Robinson was a conservative or Trump supporter without any substantiation. While Robinson’s family identifies as conservative, they have had significant disagreements with him in recent years due to his shift towards far-left ideologies.
Robinson was reportedly living with a far-left transgender partner who expressed animosity towards Christians and conservatives. He allegedly told his partner that Kirk’s views on transgender issues were “hateful” when asked about the motivation behind his actions. Officials, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox, have confirmed that evidence indicates Robinson’s alignment with leftist beliefs.
On the day of the shooting, Robinson instructed his partner to check under his keyboard, leading to the discovery of a note stating, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it,” according to court documents.
Further communication revealed that Robinson had been contemplating the attack for over a week, with messages indicating his frustration with Kirk’s perceived hatred. Following the incident, federal and state law enforcement agencies are investigating various left-wing groups in Utah to determine if any had prior knowledge of Robinson’s plans or assisted him afterward. Notably, one group deleted its social media accounts shortly after the shooting, as reported by Axios.
Additionally, the accused shooter engraved a message on shell casings that read “hey fascist, catch,” along with a reference to an Italian communist song popular among Antifa groups.
In light of the substantial evidence contradicting Kimmel’s claims, several conservatives and critics are demanding his dismissal. Fox News columnist David Marcus commented, “They lie so easily. You almost have to admire it.” Conservative pundit Guy Benson remarked on X, “The total fiction that Charlie’s assassin is a right winger (he’s a left-winger) has been swallowed whole across vast swaths of the Left — so much so that they’re self-righteously & falsely lecturing conservatives for understanding actual reality. Also, this is a ‘comedy’ show.”
Political strategist Jake Blum urged Kimmel to retract his statements in the next monologue, stating, “If [Jimmy Kimmel] doesn’t clarify tonight, he absolutely needs to be fired. Sickest media disinformation campaign of all time.”
