CNN data analyst Harry Enten didn’t hold back in a scathing breakdown of the Democratic Party’s current political standing, calling their brand “total and complete garbage” and warning that the party is “historically divided” as the 2028 presidential race takes shape.
Enten pointed out that Democrats, unlike in previous election cycles, lack a clear frontrunner. “It is a complete and utter mess. It is messier than a hoarder’s basement,” he said. For the first time since 1992, no Democrat is polling above 25%. “At this particular point, there is no one—no one—in the Democratic race for president who’s polling at 25% plus,” he added, dealing a blow to high-profile names like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
He encouraged lesser-known Democrats to jump in. “The water is quite warm. If you’re a Democrat potentially thinking about running in 2028, jump right in — because at this point, there is no front-runner.”
Enten contrasted the chaos with the Republican side, where former President Trump is the undisputed leader and Vice President JD Vance is already a strong frontrunner for the GOP nomination.
CNN’s Kate Bolduan asked whether the Democrats’ unpopularity as a party was dragging down potential candidates. Enten replied, “I think that that is in large part of what’s going on… the Democratic brand is in the basement. It is total and complete garbage in the mind of the American public.”
He cited record-low favorability ratings for the party: “The Democratic Party’s net favorable rating — record lows in all three. Wall Street Journal, 30 points underwater. CNN, 26 points underwater. Gallup, 26 points underwater. And that is being driven in large part by discontent within the Democratic base. The Democratic base wants something different.”

Even Kamala Harris couldn’t name a single leader in the Democratic Party during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She also indicated she doesn’t plan to run in 2028.
As of now, betting markets show JD Vance leading the 2028 race with 28%, followed by Gavin Newsom at 15%, AOC at 9%, and Pete Buttigieg at 8%.
