President Trump, speaking to reporters on July 3rd at Joint Base Andrews before heading to a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, addressed growing concerns over violence in Washington, D.C. The remarks came just days after a congressional intern, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, was tragically killed by a stray bullet in the city.
When asked about the escalating crime, Trump acknowledged the constitutional authority granted to Congress over Washington, D.C., and indicated that his administration plans to address the issue in the coming days.
“I think DC has to become a very safe place, and we’re not gonna let anything bad happen to DC. That’s our beautiful DC,” Trump said. “We’ll have something to say about it next week.”
The capital, like many Democrat-run cities, continues to struggle with violent crime. According to recent statistics, residents in D.C. face a 1 in 87 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime.
The incident and Trump’s remarks received limited coverage over the holiday weekend. However, his commitment to restoring safety in the nation’s capital is expected to be a key focus in the coming week.
