Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently claimed she’s a “Bronx girl” and that she could eat a “Queens boy” for breakfast—a jab clearly aimed at President Trump.
But according to New York GOP Assemblyman Matt Slater, who says he grew up with her, that story doesn’t hold up. Slater says AOC is actually from Yorktown Heights, a suburban town nearly an hour away from the Bronx.
“Everybody in our community knows this is just a bold-face lie,” Slater said Friday on “Fox & Friends First.” “She grew up in Yorktown, she was on my track team.”
Slater backed up his claim by sharing high school yearbook photos of Ocasio-Cortez from Yorktown High School, where he said she was a freshman while he was a senior. Yorktown, he explained, is a “great suburban town” with “a touch of rural to it.” Ocasio-Cortez graduated from there in 2007.
While AOC has previously acknowledged her time in Westchester County, her Bronx background remains central to her political image. Slater said he decided to share the yearbook photo after her renewed attacks on Trump, including her push for impeachment following his decision to bypass Congress and strike Iranian nuclear targets.
“I saw the attacks on the president and her claims that she’s a big, tough Bronx girl,” Slater said. “To sit there and say that she’s a Bronx girl is just patently ridiculous.”
He went on to say that AOC’s denial of her suburban roots fits into what he sees as a broader “authenticity problem” among Democrats.
“She’s lying about her background, she’s lying about her upbringing,” Slater said.
“I’m shocked, SHOCKED that another Democrat is lying about their heritage. Put her on the ticket with Tim Walz next time and they can together go get the moron vote.”
