Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) successfully underwent hip replacement surgery on Dec. 14 while in Europe, according to her spokesperson, Ian Krager. The California congresswoman is reportedly recovering well.
“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” Krager stated on Saturday. Pelosi expressed gratitude for the care she received from U.S. military staff at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg, describing their treatment as “excellent care and kindness.” It remains unclear which facility performed the surgery.
“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans,” the statement continued.
Krager had announced earlier that Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg, leading to her hospitalization. While specifics about the injury were not disclosed, Krager reassured that Pelosi was receiving top-tier treatment and remained active in her work.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), who is leading the delegation, extended his support, writing on social media, “Praying for a speedy recovery for Speaker Emerita Pelosi.” A group photo taken Friday at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg showed McCaul holding Pelosi’s hand.
“I’m disappointed Speaker Emerita Pelosi won’t be able to join the rest of our delegation’s events this weekend as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans. But she is strong, and I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time,” McCaul added.
The congressional delegation is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge with events in Luxembourg and Belgium, joined by veterans, service members, and foreign dignitaries.
Over her long career in Congress, Pelosi has been a key figure in Washington politics, serving as House speaker from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Reelected in November 2022 for her 20th term, she continues to represent California’s 11th Congressional District. Pelosi has also played a significant role in advancing major legislation, including President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill in 2022.
