President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming return to the White House next month means First Lady Melania Trump will also make her way back into the spotlight. A memorable 2004 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show highlighted one of Melania Trump’s admirable habits. During the show, a 58-year-old Donald Trump introduced his then-fiancée, 34-year-old Slovenian-born model Melania Knauss, and shared a small yet telling detail about her early-morning routine that he deeply admired.
“Are you neat? Are you messy?” Ellen asked Trump during their conversation.
He replied that he was neat but couldn’t compare to Melania’s meticulousness. “If I get up, leave the bed for a minute,” he said, “I come back [and] the bed is made.”
This seemingly small habit, championed by conservative thinkers like psychologist Jordan Peterson, reflects a deeper commitment to order and discipline. Peterson famously advised readers in his book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, to “make your bed.” While the advice is simple, it underscores the importance of fostering orderly habits of mind, cultivating humility, and focusing on personal responsibility before addressing broader societal issues.
Melania’s demand for orderliness and self-discipline has likely shaped the grace, calm, and humility she exhibits in public life. Throughout her tenure as First Lady, she demonstrated a refreshing composure and a reluctance to seek the spotlight—unlike the more public-facing approach of Jill Biden.
Donald Trump and Melania’s 2004 interview with DeGeneres also offered a glimpse of Trump’s enduring personality. During the segment, the future president discussed his hit TV series The Apprentice and, in classic Trump fashion, emphasized its strong ratings—a testament to his focus on measurable success. The audience applauded his candor.
