Jack Smith’s prosecutors are lawyering up as they prepare for potential action from President Trump.
Late last month, Jack Smith filed to dismiss both federal cases against President Trump, as the former president signals plans to take an aggressive approach, including dismissing the special counsel’s entire team of prosecutors. Smith sought to drop both the January 6 case and the classified documents case against Trump.
With both cases dismissed, members of Jack Smith’s investigative team are reportedly seeking legal representation. According to CNN, “One former senior White House official said aides inside the White House and across various federal agencies are intensely worried about the possibility that the incoming Trump administration will prosecute anyone deemed as having antagonized the president-elect.”
CNN also reported, “Additionally, several prominent white-collar lawyers across Washington have fielded calls in recent weeks from government officials, including investigators from Smith’s office, who are concerned they could be targeted by the incoming Trump administration.”
Last month, it was revealed that President Trump plans to dismiss Jack Smith’s entire team of prosecutors and use the Justice Department to investigate the 2020 election. Citing Trump Transition sources, The Washington Post reported that Trump intends to replace Smith’s team with a new group focused on probing election irregularities.
“President-elect Donald Trump plans to fire the entire team that worked with special counsel Jack Smith to pursue two federal prosecutions against the former president, including career attorneys typically protected from political retribution,” The Washington Post reported.
The outlet added, “Trump is also planning to assemble investigative teams within the Justice Department to hunt for evidence in battleground states that fraud tainted the 2020 election.”
Jack Smith’s team, which operated in secrecy, reportedly had a budget and staff double the size of Robert Mueller’s. While Mueller’s team of a dozen Democrats and Clinton donors pursued Trump for two years, Smith’s taxpayer-funded prosecutors escalated these efforts.
President Trump’s Justice Department is expected to publicly name and dismiss every member of Jack Smith’s prosecutorial team.
