In front of a friendly audience, Kamala Harris delivered a speech that contradicted the truth. Then, almost as if by some supernatural twist, something happened that turned both her and her remarks into a spectacle of absurdity.
On Tuesday’s episode of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Vice President Harris, while scolding others for faults that could just as easily be attributed to her, suddenly broke into an unfamiliar and puzzling accent, leaving social media users baffled.
This peculiar accent appeared in a more serious context than some of her previous dialect shifts. Earlier in the interview, host Stephen Colbert — known for his unwavering support of the establishment — asked Harris to comment on Hurricane Helene, which had recently devastated parts of the Southeast, and Hurricane Milton, a Category 4 storm barreling toward the western coast of Florida.
On Monday, Harris had accused Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of politicizing the situation, claiming he refused to take her call regarding the hurricane. DeSantis responded by telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity that the vice president had never called him in advance of any storm before, nor did she have any real role in the state’s hurricane preparations. He argued her call was a mere political stunt. Then, on Tuesday, President Joe Biden contradicted Harris by praising DeSantis’ handling of the situation.
None of this seemed to matter to Harris as she sat opposite the smug Colbert.
“What just upsets me so is the idea that any politician would play political games with these folks,” Harris said of the hurricane victims.
While no lightning struck Harris for projecting her own actions onto others, something bizarre soon followed.
“Have you no empathy, man?” she asked, suddenly speaking in what sounded like a Caribbean accent.
The audience, unsure how to react, laughed awkwardly — a familiar occurrence during tense moments on Colbert’s show.
Readers can view the entire segment on YouTube, where Harris’ “political games” remark appears around the 3:24 mark. A minute later, her mysterious new accent emerges.
On the social media platform X, users quickly picked up on the unusual shift in her voice, speculating about the origin of the accent, with guesses ranging from Jamaican to Irish.
Whatever its origin, Harris’ strange new accent effectively overshadowed the lies in her speech. As she tried to project her own disingenuous behavior onto her opponents, her attempt to express faux indignation only succeeded in making her look even more ridiculous.
