Steve Bannon reported to the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, on Monday to begin serving his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the House Committee investigating the January 6th Capitol protest.
Upon his arrival at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Bannon was formally taken into custody. Before entering the facility, he delivered a speech sharply criticizing Attorney General Merrick Garland, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and President Joe Biden.
In his remarks to supporters and protesters, Bannon expressed his willingness to serve time as a stand against what he described as tyranny, specifically pointing to the Department of Justice under Garland, Pelosi, and Biden. He stated he was proud to do so. When asked about his expectations for the upcoming months, Bannon predicted a Trump victory.
Bannon’s surrender follows his unsuccessful emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal appeals court denied his request to stay out of prison for contempt of Congress. The U.S. Supreme Court also rejected his plea.
He was convicted two years ago on two counts of contempt of Congress and received a four-month prison sentence in October 2022. Despite his legal team’s efforts to delay his sentence through various appeals, Bannon has now run out of options.
Bannon’s imprisonment is linked to his refusal to comply with subpoenas from the House Committee seeking information on his communications with former President Donald Trump after the 2020 election. He is expected to be released by November.
