A House Republican who has previously cautioned against rushing into impeaching President Biden is now urging his removal from office due to concerns about his mental fitness.
Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., informed Fox News Digital that he intends to introduce a resolution on Monday urging Biden’s Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment of the Constitution.
Buck’s primary rationale stems from Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s management of classified documents. While the report didn’t recommend charges against the president, it repeatedly depicted him as an aging leader with a faltering memory.
According to Buck, the report confirms what many Americans have observed firsthand – that President Biden is no longer capable of effectively fulfilling his presidential duties. He cited numerous instances from the report, along with public events, showcasing Biden’s apparent cognitive decline and diminished mental capacity.
Asserting the necessity of a president with both robust mental and physical capabilities to address the country’s challenges and security threats, Buck implored the vice president and the Cabinet to prioritize the nation’s interests and move forward with invoking the 25th Amendment.
In his resolution, Buck also referenced Biden’s verbal miscues and public slip-ups as indicators of cognitive decline. He highlighted recent incidents where Biden confused world leaders’ identities and made factual errors in public statements.
Despite denials from Biden and his allies regarding any decline in mental acuity, Buck’s resolution adds to mounting pressure on Biden officials to address concerns over the president’s fitness for office.
Buck, who is retiring at the end of his term, is among a minority of House GOP lawmakers who have expressed reservations about impeaching Biden over allegations of improper financial gains by his family.
While Buck initially supported formalizing the Biden impeachment inquiry in December, he has since criticized the probe’s reliance on allegations from FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who was recently indicted for lying to the bureau.
Buck emphasized the importance of avoiding a partisan impeachment spectacle and insisted on credible evidence before supporting such proceedings.
Section 4 of the 25th Amendment provides a mechanism for the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unfit for duty, transferring power to the vice president temporarily. The president can contest this declaration, triggering a congressional vote to determine his fitness for office.
Buck joins several other Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, as well as Reps. Mary Miller, R-Ill., and Mike Collins, R-Ga., in advocating for the invocation of the 25th Amendment following Hur’s report.
