Republicans Anticipate Gaining Four Seats as Members Depart Congress

According to the Washington Examiner, Republicans anticipate expanding their majority in the House by gaining “four seats amid an exodus from Congress.”

In November alone, 13 Senators and Representatives in the House announced they would not seek reelection, and more departures are expected.

The list slightly favors the Republicans, who will be competing for 10 open Democratic seats in the House and five in the Senate.

The four House seats that seem to be favorable for the Republican Party are:

  • Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI): With nearly 50 years in Congress, Kildee’s advanced age and recent cancer diagnosis led to his decision not to seek reelection in 2024.
    • Kildee’s announcement is a setback for DNC leaders, as he won the 2022 election by ten points. The Examiner reported the Cook Political Report changing its forecast of the 2024 Michigan election results from “lean Democrat” to “toss-up.”
  • Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-NC): Redistricting in the state prompted Jackson to announce he would not run for Congress again but would instead run for the state’s next Attorney General.
    • “I’m running for attorney general, and I’m going to use that job to go after political corruption,” Jackson announced last month.
  • Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA): Diagnosed with a severe, rare, debilitating neurological disorder three months ago, Wexton announced she would not be running for office in 2024.
    • The Cook Political Report continues to forecast the election results for Virginia’s 10th District as “likely Democrat.”
  • Rep. Abigail Spanberger (R-VA): Spanberger recently announced she would not seek reelection to Congress in 2024 but would be running for Governor.
    • The Cook Political Report adjusted its forecast for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District from “likely Democrat” to “lean Democrat” following her announcement.
