The family of Derek Chauvin, the disgraced former police officer, alleges a lack of information regarding his prison stabbing, which necessitated life-saving measures by prison staff.
Carolyn Pawlenty, Chauvin’s mother, discovered her son’s serious injury through media reports and received no official communication about his condition. Expressing worry and fear, Pawlenty criticized the prison for not utilizing the emergency contact number available to her.
Chauvin’s attorney, Bill Mohrman, attempted to contact the Bureau of Prisons for information but received no response.
Another attorney, Gregory M. Erickson, criticized the prison’s transparency, suggesting it reflects a poorly run facility where Chauvin’s assault occurred without adequate prevention.
Highlighting the institutional shortcomings, Erickson emphasized that family members responsible for Chauvin’s medical decisions and emergency contacts were left uninformed about the stabbing.
Life-saving measures were administered by prison employees before Chauvin’s hospitalization, according to The Bureau of Prisons.
While both Chauvin and his attacker were taken to the hospital, the identity of the assailant remains unknown. Chauvin is currently reported to be in stable condition.
