Former President Trump rejects the idea of age limits for U.S. politicians but expresses support for mental competency tests, deeming them a “good idea.”
He shared these thoughts during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he discussed the topic of age limits, particularly in light of his own age (77) and the age of President Biden (80), who might be his opponent in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump mentioned taking a cognitive test a few years ago at Walter Reed, which he successfully completed, indicating his approval of such testing. While some argue that age limits or cognitive tests might be considered “unconstitutional,” Trump wasn’t entirely certain about this assertion.
He pointed out that some of the world’s greatest leaders have served well into their 80s and emphasized that he doesn’t consider Biden too old but rather incompetent, which he views as a more significant concern.
Trump would approach 80 years of age within approximately 18 months of taking office if re-elected, while Biden would begin his second term at the age of 82.
Biden has faced increased scrutiny due to his age, marked by frequent memory lapses and stuttering speeches.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has advocated for cognitive tests for all U.S. politicians, though she hasn’t endorsed age limits. She has proposed legislation requiring presidential candidates and members of Congress over the age of 75 to pass competency tests.
Haley is running against Trump in the 2024 Republican Presidential Primary, although Trump maintains a significant lead over other candidates in polls. Trump mentioned his interest in the concept of having a female vice president on his ticket but emphasized that he would ultimately select the best person for the role.
